Our Part to Play: Key Takeaways from Our First Webinar on Africa's Digital Health Ecosystem
On Saturday, April 5th, 2025, Healthcare Foundry Africa kicked off the first of many insightful conversations with our inaugural webinar: “Building a Digital Healthcare Ecosystem in Africa: Our Part to Play”. The session brought together a dynamic group of healthcare professionals, tech innovators, policymakers, and researchers to discuss the collaboration and innovation needed to transform Africa’s healthcare landscape. The discussion, led by key industry leaders, was a powerful call to action, outlining the roles every stakeholder must play. Here are the key insights from the event. ### The Foundation: A Call for Interoperability and Standards Mr. Raphael Akangbe emphasized that a resilient digital health ecosystem must be data-driven and interoperable. He spoke on the urgent need for digital solutions that can communicate effectively and inclusively across different platforms. This requires a solid foundation of standards, legal frameworks, and robust digital health training in Nigeria, as he pointed out that innovation cannot thrive without the right knowledge and structure. ### The Focus: Patient-Centric Solutions and Accessibility Mr. Paul Aderoju reinforced that as digital literacy in Nigeria grows, both data and mobile health solutions must be centered on the needs of the patient. He advocated for accessible health insurance and highlighted the need for hospitals to evolve into dual hubs for both data-driven research and crucial workforce training to strengthen the entire ecosystem. ### The Method: Building for Reality with Context and Collaboration Mr. Adegoke Adewoye reminded us that every digital health solution must be context-aware, sustainable, and built upon existing infrastructure to succeed. In a memorable call to action, he urged innovators to “go outside and touch grass”—to deeply understand the on-the-ground realities of the healthcare system. He stressed the importance of collaborating directly with healthcare professionals and investing in local capacity. ### The Bridge: Translating Research into Real-World Impact The panel also tackled the critical challenge of translating research into tangible impact. According to Mr. Raphael Akangbe, this journey begins with original, well-implemented research. He noted that without originality and platforms offering real-world exposure and practical application, attracting investment and driving meaningful change remains a significant hurdle. ### The Collective Call to Action Ultimately, the webinar was a unified call to action for a digital healthcare future that is local, inclusive, and rooted in reality. Building this future is a shared responsibility. Every stakeholder—from governments and hospitals to startups and researchers—has a vital part to play. We thank our incredible speakers and engaged audience for making this first webinar a resounding success. Let’s continue the conversation and build the future of healthcare in Africa, together.
